The $25,000 Snappy Turtle Cookies

 

Turtle Cookies...Snappy

Sift together ...1.5 cups sifted flour
                           1/4 teaspoon soda
                           1/4 teaspoon salt
Blend together 1/2 cup butter or margarine and
                            1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar, creaming well.
Add ...............  1 egg and
                            1 egg yolk; beat well. (Reserve white.)
Blend in .......... 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
                             1/8 teaspoon maple flavoring
Add .................. dry ingredients gradually; mix thoroughly.
Arrange ............ Split pecan halves (rounded side up) in groups of three on greased 
                              baking sheets  to resemble head and legs of turtle.
Mold ................  dough into balls (use rounded teaspoonful of dough for each). 
                               Dip bottom into egg white and press into nuts.
Bake ................. in moderate oven (350° F.) 10 to 12 minutes.  Do not overbake.  
                              Cool and frost generously.

Chocolate Frosting
Combine 2 squares (2-oz.) Baker's Chocolate, 1/4 cup milk and 1 tablespoon butter in top of double boiler.  heat over boiling water until chocolate melts; blend until smooth.  remove from heat;  Add 1 cup sifted confectioners sugar.  Beat until smooth and glossy.

My Mom's Recipe Box

I found this box in a cardboard box of items that I inherited from my Mother.  A well made wood box that was clearly a well used treasure. It is Oak, with finger jointed corners.   Finger Jointed Oak Box It has a "Shaw-Walker" decal on the front. Research suggests this box was made in the early 1900s. Shaw-Walker Small brass hinges and a clever arced retaining bracket are the only visible external elements. The brass parts have oxidized with age.  Brass Hinges Side Bracket The outside has a warm brown varnish on it.  The inside is unfinished.   Inside are a collection of recipes that have been passed down from my grandmother Lucille  to my mother Joanne and now to me.  Treasure Inside! This blog is about sharing them with my siblings and everyone else.  I remember many of these recipes as meals or treats served to my family of 8 over a lifetime.  Following posts will be each of these recipes, photographed and transcribed. Potato Recipe

Potato Recipe   2lbs frozen hash browns, thawed and crumbled . Add 2 tbsp chopped onions. 1 pint sour cream. 1 can cream of  chicken soup. 1/2 cup melted butter. 1 tsp salt 1 tsp pepper Topping:  Lay slices of American cheese over the top. Sprinkle 2 cups crumbled corn flakes in 1/4 cup melted butter over cheese. BAKE 350° for 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Another Zucchini Bread

  By Fran Estes Awfully Good! Zucchini Bread 1 cup vegetable oil. 1.5 cups sugar 3 eggs 2 cups grated zucchini 2 cups sifted flour 2 tsp vanilla 1/4 tsp baking powder 2 tsp soda 3 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp salt 1 cup raisins. 1 cups nuts Grease and flour 2 large bread pans.  Bake at 350° for 1 hour.
